Overview

How and why do people choose to remember significant events of the past? Exploring the site at Kamay Botany Bay National Park, students will consider the traditional use of the land by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people using artefact discovery, visit the monuments located within the National Park and complete their lessons at the farmhouse using slate and chalk

 Outcomes

  • HT2-1 identifies celebrations and commemorations of significance in Australia and the world
  • HT2-2 describes and explains how significant individuals, groups and events contributed to changes in the local community over time
  • HT2-5 applies skills of historical inquiry and communication.

Key Inquiry Questions

  • Who lived here first and how do we know?
  • How has our community changed? What features have been lost and what features have been retained?
  • What is the nature of the contribution made by different groups and individuals in the community?

 

Students will

  • Investigate and compare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and European culture including water craft, food, shelter, artifacts and communication.
  • Explore some natural resources used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for food, medicine, and tools.
  • Explore the monuments within the park and the significance at this site.
  • Visit Alpha Farm School House to role play a typical 19th century school session.
