Overview:

The Local Area Study is aimed at promoting students’ knowledge of their own local environment whilst encouraging teachers to use it as a rich teaching and learning resource.  The program can be used as a vehicle to promote sustainability by focussing on areas such as stormwater management issues in schools and households, while also allowing students to consider solutions to problems.  By learning more about their own backyard students will be able to spread much needed education within their families and communities about why it is so important we protect and improve local waterway health.

Key Inquiry questions:

• How do people and environments influence one another?
• How do people influence places and the management of spaces within them?

Student will:

• Learn about stormwater including the difference between stormwater and sewerage
• Locate where the school is within a catchment\where their stormwater goes
• Learn about types of stormwater pollution using a stormwater model
• Go on a school safari to analyse school and local area stormwater drains
• Carry out water quality testing of local waterway
• Investigate biodiversity (Dipnet for water bugs and carry out an invertebrate search)
