Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus (2024)
Outcomes
· STE-SCI-01 identifies and describes characteristics of living things, properties of materials, and movement
· STE-PQU-01 poses questions based on observations to collect data
Key inquiry question:
What are the needs of living things?
Activities may vary based on school context — examples provided below:
1. Edward’s Letter and P-A-W-S Board
- Children read Edward’s Letter and learn about the P-A-W-S Board
2. Schoolyard Sensory Safari
- children explore the school oval, gardens, or playground
- Use magnifying glasses to look closely at leaves, soil, or even cracks in the pavement for signs of plant or insect life
- Students record what they find on a Listening Log or with Rainbow Pieces to show what colours, sounds, and movements they noticed
Small World Construction: Build a Habitat
- Using natural materials collected from the school grounds (twigs, leaves, pebbles) or craft materials, students design a mini habitat for their teddy bears and animals
- Challenge: Does your habitat have plants, air, water, and shelter?
Teddy Bear Survival Games
- Teddy Bear Tag: Students learn about predator-prey relationships through a tag game where bears find safe zones (shelter).
- Musical Trees: Students pretend to be animals looking for trees when the music stops—teaching about shelter and space.
Lost Teddy Hunt & Teddy Bear Picnic
- Students follow clues hidden around the playground to find their teddy bears and picnic spot
- Clues reinforce survival needs and the P-A-W-S concept
Optional Indoor or Wet Weather Activities
- Teddy Care Station: Role-play taking care of teddy bears using water bowls, leaves for shelter, and “air bubbles” (balloons)
- Story Circle: Read a story about animals and their habitats, then discuss what they need to survive
- Sensory Tubs: Small containers with sand, leaves, water, and twigs for children to explore textures and patterns
Learning across the curriculum content:
- Sustainability
- Literacy and numeracy
