Stage 2: Community and Remembrance incursion
Location:
Bring the expert educators from Kamay Botany Bay Environmental Education Centre to your school for an exciting, hands-on incursion! Our qualified teachers will engage students in meaningful historical inquiry right in their own learning environment, transforming the school into a living classroom of discovery.
Overview:
How and why do people choose to remember significant events of the past?
Step back in time as your students become historians for the day! In this immersive incursion, they will explore how and why people remember significant events, investigating the traditional use of the land by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through hands-on artefact discovery. Students will examine how history is preserved through monuments and memorials, deepening their understanding of commemoration and historical perspectives.
Bringing history to life in your own classroom, students will experience early colonial education by writing with slate and chalk, just as children did in the past. This engaging, curriculum-aligned program fosters curiosity and a personal connection to Australia’s history—all without the need for travel.
Tailored to your school’s needs, this incursion offers a dynamic and cost-effective alternative to excursions, providing an unforgettable learning experience right at your doorstep!
The incursion Community and Remembrance supports students in exploring historical skills and concepts as well as the perspectives of traditional Aboriginal lifestyle at this site. They will consider aspects of continuity and change.
