Unit Description
Coastal environments are dynamic and interconnected systems that provide important environmental, social and economic benefits. However, increasing urban development and human activity continue to place significant pressure on Australia's coastlines. Through fieldwork at Kamay Botany Bay, students investigate coastal processes, explore food web relationships within coastal ecosystems, and examine how human activities influence environmental change.
Using a range of geographical tools and fieldwork techniques, students collect and analyse data to evaluate coastal management strategies, including dune systems and erosion-control structures. Students develop an understanding of the connections between people and environments and the importance of sustainable management for the future of coastal ecosystems.

Students will:
- Participate in a food web investigation by labelling animals within a coastal ecosystem and using species information to identify their ecological roles
- Conduct interviews to investigate community perceptions of coastal use, management and sustainability
- Use GPS technology and fieldwork methods to collect and record geographical data
- Investigate the role of sand dunes in coastal processes by constructing and testing dune models
- Complete field sketches to identify and analyse natural and built features of the coastal environment
- Examine the purpose and effectiveness of coastal management structures, including the Sea Bee wall
- Analyse fieldwork data to evaluate strategies used to manage coastal change and promote sustainability
