While teacher attendance is welcome, it is not required. Please note that transport to Kamay Botany Bay National Park and from the Kurnell Public School site at the conclusion of the workshop must be arranged by the school or parents/carers.
Overview
Dewrang Art: A One-Day Visual Arts Workshop for Gifted high school students
Unleash your students’ creativity in a sculpture-focused workshop set in the stunning Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Designed for high potential, gifted, and talented (HPGE) high school students, this exclusive one-day program offers engaging activities led by Indigenous artist Amy Hill, founder of Dewrang Art.
Students will explore sculpture as a form of artistic expression while drawing inspiration from the park’s rugged coastline, bushland, and rocky platforms. The workshop nurtures creative skills, social well-being, and cultural understanding through hands-on learning and collaboration with peers.
Workshops run on selected dates throughout the year and do not require teacher attendance. Each session accommodates up to 30 students.
Please note: Students are not selected by us—schools simply enrol students who would benefit from this unique experience.
Students will:
- Begin with a Cultural & Historical introduction led by Amy Hill, exploring colonial and First Nations histories of Kamay Botany Bay to provide cultural context for their creative work.
- Join an Art Discussion & Inspiration session, touring and discussing three site-specific public sculptures, reflecting on place, materials, and cultural stories.
- Take part in On-Country Life Drawing, an outdoor observational drawing session capturing the natural forms and textures of the local environment to inspire their artwork ideas.
- Create their own artwork in a workshop using sustainable and natural materials.
- Conclude with an Exhibition & Reflection, presenting their work and sharing their creative process at the Kamay Botany Bay Environmental Education Centre on the Kurnell Public School site.
